One Root, Several Confessions Built on It

The New Hampshire Confession did not stay confined to New Hampshire, and it did not stay confined to one Baptist body either. Its wide nineteenth century circulation meant later Baptist conventions had a choice when they came to write their own confessional statements: adopt its text directly, adapt it, or build something new on its framework. The Southern Baptist Convention chose the third path in 1925, drafting the Baptist Faith and Message as its own document on the New Hampshire model rather than adopting the earlier text outright, then revising that new document twice more on its own terms.

The National Baptist Convention, USA, Incorporated took the more direct route. Its own Articles of Faith, published on the denomination's official site, follow the New Hampshire Confession's eighteen article structure and much of its original wording closely enough that the convention's statement is properly read as an edited version of the New Hampshire text rather than an independent composition. The two paths, one denomination writing its own document from the same starting point and another adopting the source text with light editing, describe two different and equally real relationships to the same nineteenth century confession, and neither should be mistaken for the other. The American Baptist Churches USA shows a third path again: no binding confession at all, a reminder that even within one shared Baptist inheritance, confessional practice itself remains genuinely unsettled.
