The Voynich Manuscript is a roughly 240-page illustrated codex written in an unknown script and undeciphered language, filled with botanical, astronomical, balneological and pharmaceutical drawings. It is named for the bookseller Wilfrid Voynich, who acquired it in 1912, and is held at Yale's Beinecke Library as MS 408. The parchment is firmly dated to the early fifteenth century, but the meaning of the writing remains unresolved.

Rene Zandbergen's The Voynich Manuscript: Origin and Radiocarbon Dating (2023) surveys the manuscript's decipherment attempts against its confirmed early fifteenth century radiocarbon date. Zandbergen's method is a critical survey of the many proposed decipherments against the manuscript's own script and statistical text properties, and he records that whether the text encodes a natural language, a cipher, a constructed artificial language, or is entirely meaningless glossolalia remains an open scholarly question, since no proposed decipherment has produced a reading independent scholars have been able to verify or reproduce.

Overview

The Voynich Manuscript is an illustrated codex of roughly 240 vellum pages written in an unknown script that has never been deciphered. Its drawings fall into recognisable thematic sections, botanical, astronomical and astrological, "balneological" (nude figures in systems of pools and tubes), cosmological, and pharmaceutical, yet the plants match no known species and the accompanying text yields no confirmed meaning.

Held at Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library as MS 408, it is one of the most studied and least understood documents in the world. Crucially, the manuscript itself is not a mystery in the way legends often are: it is a genuine physical book whose parchment has been securely dated to the early fifteenth century. The enigma is confined to its writing system and language, which have resisted professional cryptanalysis for over a century. This distinction, an authentic object bearing an unread text, is why the site records it as attested and extant rather than debated.

History and Provenance

The documented trail begins in seventeenth-century Central Europe. A letter of 1665 or 1666 by Johannes Marcus Marci, found tucked inside the volume, sends it to the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher in Rome and reports a tradition that Emperor Rudolf II had once paid a large sum for it. Earlier owners named in the correspondence include the alchemist Georg Baresch and, by inference, figures at the Prague court. From Kircher the manuscript entered the library of the Collegio Romano, where it remained, largely unnoticed, until the book dealer Wilfrid Voynich bought it in 1912.

Voynich promoted the theory that the friar Roger Bacon (d. c. 1292) had written it, which drew wide attention. The manuscript passed after Voynich's death through his widow Ethel and the bookseller H. P. Kraus, who donated it to Yale in 1969. The 2009 radiocarbon dating of the parchment to 1404-1438 places its manufacture well after Bacon and settles at least the age of the physical support.

Authenticity and Scholarship

Two questions must be kept apart: is the object genuine, and can the text be read? On the first, the evidence is decisive. In 2009 the University of Arizona radiocarbon-dated four independent parchment samples, obtaining a consistent range of 1404-1438 CE; pigment and ink studies are compatible with that period. The book is therefore an authentic early-fifteenth-century manuscript, not a modern fake, though the ink itself was not dated, leaving open when the writing was added. On the second question, no proposed decipherment has won scholarly acceptance.

Professional cryptographers, including William F. Friedman, could not break it, and later claims of solution, natural languages, ciphers, constructed systems, have repeatedly failed peer scrutiny. A live minority view holds that the text may be meaningless, an early-modern hoax designed to look like a book of secrets; statistical features of the script are cited both for and against genuine linguistic content. The scholarly consensus is honest agnosticism: a real book whose message, if any, is still unknown.
