The Chain of Transmission Runs Through Abu Bakr

Every Sufi order traces its spiritual authority through a silsila, an unbroken chain of masters transmitting teaching back to the Prophet Muhammad, and in nearly every case that chain passes through Ali, the Prophet's cousin and son in law, whom most orders hold to have received the Prophet's inner teaching directly. The Naqshbandi order is the conspicuous exception: its silsila runs instead through Abu Bakr, the Prophet's closest companion and, in Sunni reckoning, the first caliph, a difference scholarship on the order treats as doctrinally deliberate rather than accidental. Naqshbandi tradition locates the origin of this line in the cave near Mecca where the Prophet and Abu Bakr sheltered during the migration to Medina, holding that a form of instruction passed between them there in silence, without spoken words, a transmission the order's own literature treats as the root of the silent dhikr practiced by its adepts today. Placing the chain's origin in Abu Bakr rather than Ali locates the order's spiritual descent inside the Sunni caliphal line, distinguishing it from the many tariqas whose Alid silsilas run through a lineage more commonly associated, though not exclusively, with Shia veneration of Ali. What exactly was conveyed in that silent exchange is treated within the order as a matter transmitted from master to disciple rather than as a formula available in any published account, and this entry follows that line rather than reconstructing it.

The Abu Bakr silsila did not originate with the order's formal founder; it descends through a series of Central Asian teachers known collectively as the Khwajagan, the masters, active in and around Bukhara from the eleventh century onward, before Baha ad-Din Naqshband, who died in 1389, gave the line the organized form and the name it carries today. The Encyclopaedia of Islam records that Naqshband himself insisted his teaching restated instruction already present among the Khwajagan rather than an innovation of his own, a claim consistent with the order's wider insistence that its authority rests on unbroken transmission rather than on any single founder's originality. From its Central Asian base the order spread with unusual reach: it took root across the Ottoman Empire, was carried into Mughal India where the reformer Ahmad Sirhindi built a distinct branch of it in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and later reached the North Caucasus, where Naqshbandi affiliation shaped resistance to Russian expansion in the nineteenth century under leaders including Imam Shamil. Scholarship on Sufism in Russia and Central Asia treats this geographic range, from Bukhara to Istanbul to Delhi to the Caucasus, as unusual among the tariqas, attributing it partly to the order's emphasis on sober, this worldly engagement rather than withdrawal, which let Naqshbandi teachers move comfortably among rulers, scholars and, when required, armies.
