The presiding goddess of Carthage from at least the fifth century BCE onward, titled "Face of Baal" (pene Baal) and paired with Baal Hammon as the city's two chief deities, her name eventually placed first on Carthaginian dedications in a reversal of their earlier order. She is represented by the so-called Sign of Tanit, a stylised human figure of a triangle beneath a horizontal bar and circle, found carved into thousands of stelae across Punic North Africa, Sardinia and Sicily. Her cult and iconography are attested far more heavily in the western, Punic Mediterranean than in the Phoenician homeland, where her name barely appears, making her substantially a product of Carthage's own religious development rather than an import carried unchanged from Tyre or Sidon.

Worship and PracticeThe Carthage tophet, an open-air precinct holding thousands of urned cremated infant and animal remains beneath stelae dedicated "to our lady Tanit and to Baal Hammon", the largest single body of physical evidence for her cult. 1 Whether the tophet burials represent ritual child sacrifice, as ancient Greek and Roman writers hostile to Carthage claimed and some modern archaeologists still argue from the demographic profile of the remains, or predominantly a cemetery for infants who died of natural causes and were given a religious burial and dedication, is a genuine and unresolved dispute in current scholarship. Osteological studies of age at death have been read to support both readings, and no consensus position exists; this atlas states the disagreement rather than adopting either side. Origins
