Currently States The Buddha's own dates are disputed, c. 480-400 BCE on the revised chronology
Heinz Bechert edited the symposium volumes Die Datierung des historischen Buddha, The Dating of the Historical Buddha, Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht, Gottingen, in which specialists in Indian, Sri Lankan and Chinese Buddhist chronology cross-referenced the reign lists and years-since-the-Buddha's-death figures preserved in sources such as the Dipavamsa, the Mahavamsa and Chinese Buddhist chronicles against the one independently datable anchor available, the third century BCE inscriptions of the emperor Ashoka. Because the Buddha's own life is known only through those later, sometimes inconsistent tallies rather than through any contemporary record, the symposium's comparative method produced two competing results, a traditional long chronology placing his death near 483 BCE and a revised short chronology placing it closer to 400 BCE, and since the Four Noble Truths are dated to his first sermon at Sarnath, their date moves with whichever chronology is followed.
