The fixed star Achernar lies at Pisces 15 degrees 19 minutes, of the nature of Jupiter. It is Alpha Eridani, the brilliant star at the far southern end of Eridanus the River, its Arabic name meaning the end of the river. It gives a beneficent, expansive character, success in public office, religion, and honors, and success gained with a good and cheerful disposition. Alpha Eridani, the End of the River

Achernar is Alpha Eridani, the brightest star of Eridanus, the long winding constellation of the celestial river, and it marks the river's far southern end, its name, from akhir al-nahr, means the end of the river. It is a hot blue star of the B class at about 140 light years, and it is one of the most oblate stars known: it spins so rapidly that it is flung into a markedly flattened, squashed shape, its equatorial diameter far exceeding the distance between its poles. It lies so far south that it never rises for observers across most of Europe and the northern United States.

Achernar's oblateness is extreme even among fast-rotating stars: its equatorial diameter has been measured at more than fifty percent greater than its polar diameter, making it one of the most flattened stars known, a shape so extreme that standard stellar-structure models have struggled to reproduce it without invoking additional physical effects such as internal mixing or a surrounding equatorial disc of shed material. Achernar's far-southern declination means it was entirely unknown to the ancient Mediterranean astrologers and entered the astrological catalogue only once European navigators began systematically mapping the southern sky from the sixteenth century onward.

The Single Nature of Jupiter

The tradition gives Achernar the nature of Jupiter alone, an unusual single, unmixed attribution, and Robson reads it for religious feeling, benevolence, public honour and a just and upright character, a wholly benefic delineation. Because the star lies far below the horizon of the classical Mediterranean, this reading, like those of the other deep-southern stars, comes from the modern compiling tradition rather than from Ptolemy. Its genuine distinction is physical and striking: a fast-spinning, flattened, brilliant blue star marking the mouth of the sky-river, one of the notable sights of the southern heavens and invisible to much of the north.

That Achernar receives Jupiter alone rather than a paired planetary nature is unusual enough in the catalogue to be worth flagging as a structural feature: nearly all the other stars in this whole set of tables carry a two-planet delineation, so a single, unmixed attribution like Achernar's Jupiter is one of a small minority of exceptions among the far-southern stars that entered the tradition only after Ptolemy's time. Achernar's brilliant blue colour and extreme rotation together mark it as a young, massive, short-lived star, one that will exhaust its nuclear fuel and end its life on a timescale of only tens of millions of years, an astronomical eyeblink next to the Sun's expected lifespan.
