Leonardo da Vinci (1452 to 1519) was a Florentine painter, engineer and polymath of the Italian Renaissance, active chiefly under Medici and other Italian patronage in Florence and Milan and later at the French court, where he died. Alongside paintings including the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, his notebooks record wide-ranging investigations into anatomy, engineering, optics and geometry, including studies of overlapping-circle grids of the kind later popularised as the Flower of Life pattern. He supplied the geometric woodcut illustrations, among them the compound of two tetrahedra now called the stella octangula, for his friend Luca Pacioli's De Divina Proportione, printed in Venice in 1509, a treatise on the golden ratio that did much to fix the association between geometric proportion and aesthetic beauty for later centuries. Twentieth century sacred-geometry writers frequently invoke his notebooks and his Vitruvian Man as forerunners of their own systems, a modern reading of Renaissance material rather than anything Leonardo himself proposed.

The Notebooks Behind a Modern Diagram

Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks are a working record of a restless mind, filled with anatomical drawings, engineering sketches, optical studies and, among the geometric material, pages of overlapping-circle grids of the kind now widely called the Flower of Life and Seed of Life patterns. He studied these grids in the Codex Atlanticus across the decades from roughly 1478 to 1519, working through their proportions as a matter of geometric interest, the same interest running through the rest of his technical notebooks.

That documented fact and the modern sacred-geometry reading of the same pattern are two different things, and the separate articles on Flower of Life and Seed of Life keep them separate. The circle-grid pattern itself is genuinely ancient and geographically wide, attested on Assyrian palace thresholds, Roman mosaic floors and in Islamic geometric design centuries before Leonardo drew it; his notebooks are one more data point in that documented history, not its origin. The name Flower of Life, the sequence running from a single circle through the seven-circle Seed to the nineteen-circle Flower, and the spiritual meanings attached to each stage are a late twentieth century development, set out and popularized by Drunvalo Melchizedek from the mid-1980s onward, with no demonstrated line of transmission back to Leonardo or any earlier appearance of the pattern.

What Leonardo's notebooks actually show is a Renaissance polymath doing what he did with nearly every subject that caught his attention: taking a known geometric construction and working out its proportions more rigorously than his predecessors had, for its own sake, centuries before anyone attached a name like Flower of Life to the result.

Illustrating a Friend's Book on Proportion

In 1509 the Franciscan friar and mathematician Luca Pacioli published De Divina Proportione in Venice, a treatise on the golden ratio and its role in geometry, architecture and human proportion, and its geometric illustrations, more than sixty woodcuts of regular and semi-regular solids, were supplied by his friend Leonardo da Vinci, whom Pacioli had known since both worked in Milan under Ludovico Sforza's patronage. Leonardo's drawings show the solids as skeletal, transparent frames rather than solid blocks, letting a reader see through each shape to its structure, a genuine innovation in geometric illustration at the time.

Among the solids Leonardo illustrated is a compound of two regular tetrahedra, interpenetrating so their eight outer vertices mark the corners of a cube, which the book presents as an elevated octahedron. The astronomer Johannes Kepler would later name this same compound solid the stella octangula, over a century after Pacioli's book appeared. In the twentieth century, sacred-geometry writers identified this compound-tetrahedron shape with Merkabah, a Hebrew word for chariot properly belonging to an entirely separate and much older tradition of Jewish visionary mysticism concerned with Ezekiel's throne-vision, an identification with no basis in that tradition's own texts and dating only from the 1980s.

Leonardo's documented contribution was narrower and, on its own terms, considerable: precise, structurally legible illustrations of Euclidean solids for a mathematician's treatise, drawn by an artist whose engineering training let him render three-dimensional geometry with a clarity contemporary illustrators had not matched. The stella octangula's spiritual reputation arrived four and a half centuries after Leonardo put ink to the page.
