Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) was a Persian polymath born, and later buried, in Nishapur, active as a mathematician, astronomer and poet. He gave a geometric solution to certain cubic equations and helped design the Jalali calendar under the Seljuk sultan Malik-Shah, a solar calendar more accurate than the Gregorian later adopted in the West. He is known in the wider world chiefly as a poet through the Rubaiyat, a collection of quatrains whose authorship, extent and philosophical stance (a hedonism inconsistent with, or a coded Sufi mysticism reconciled with, orthodox Islam, depending on the reading) remain genuinely disputed among scholars, since a large body of verse was attributed to him after his death by writers of very different views. He is a distinct historical person from Kerry Thornley, a twentieth century Discordian founder who took the nickname Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst.

Omar Khayyam, born in Nishapur in 1048 and later buried there after his death in 1131, worked chiefly as a mathematician and astronomer before the poetry that would eventually make him famous in the wider world. His mathematical work gave a geometric solution to certain cubic equations, a genuine advance handled through the intersection of conic sections rather than the algebraic methods that would only come centuries later.

That mathematical and astronomical skill drew him into service at the court of the Seljuk sultan Malik Shah, where Khayyam helped design the Jalali calendar, a solar calendar whose accuracy exceeded the Gregorian calendar that Europe would not adopt for another five centuries. The underlying observational work is recorded in the Zij i Malikshahi, astronomical tables compiled at the Malik Shah observatory in Isfahan that supported the calendar reform.

This technical career, cubic equations solved by geometry and a solar calendar more precise than the one the West would later adopt, represents Khayyam's own documented output as a working scientist at a major medieval Islamic court, work that stands independently of the poetry later generations would attribute to him in far greater volume than he ever likely wrote himself.

Outside the world of medieval Islamic astronomy, Omar Khayyam is known chiefly as a poet, through the Rubaiyat, a collection of quatrains that became famous in the West largely through later translation. The trouble is that the authorship, extent and even philosophical stance of the Rubaiyat remain genuinely disputed among scholars, since a large body of verse was attributed to Khayyam after his death by writers holding very different views from one another.

That disputed philosophical stance runs in two directions at once. Some readings find in the quatrains a hedonism sitting uneasily beside orthodox Islam, wine and pleasure celebrated in verses that seem to reject religious constraint outright. Other readers find instead a coded Sufi mysticism, symbolic language that reconciles with orthodox belief once its imagery is read correctly. Scholars have not settled which reading, if either fully, reflects verses Khayyam himself actually composed.

One further confusion is worth separating out cleanly: Khayyam the eleventh century Persian polymath is a distinct historical person from Kerry Thornley, a twentieth century Discordian founder who adopted the nickname Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst, a modern borrowing of the name rather than any claim of identity with the medieval poet and scientist himself.
