The thirty-six channels of the Human Design bodygraph each join two of its nine centres and are formed by a pair of gates, one at each end. A channel is defined when both of its gates are activated in a chart, which in turn defines the two centres it connects, so the channels are what build up a chart's overall pattern of definition. Each channel carries its own theme, blending the meanings of its two gates, and the set of thirty-six is a fixed feature of the system Ra Uru Hu set out in the late 1980s, mapping every possible connection between the nine centres.

Origins

Origin Period: Created in 1987 as a synthesis of four older systems, the I Ching, the chakra teaching, Kabbalah and astrology, and used as an instrument of psychological counselling. The system's components are read from a chart calculated for a birth moment. 1

Status

Standing as a Comparative Category: A modern authored system with no established scientific standing. In the only empirical test located, characterisations produced by Human Design methods could not be validated against the NEO PI-R personality inventory, and assent to them was found to be consistent with the Barnum effect. 2

The Thirty-Six Channels

The thirty-six channels of the Human Design bodygraph each join two of the nine centres and are formed by a pair of gates, one at each end. A channel is "defined" when both of its gates are activated by the planetary calculation, and defining a channel in turn defines the two centres it connects, so the channels are what build up the pattern of definition in a chart.

Each channel carries a theme, a "circuitry" and a keynote describing the kind of energy it represents, and the set of thirty-six is a fixed feature of the system, mapping every possible connection between the centres.
