Human Design sorts every chart into one of five types (Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector and Reflector), determined by which centres are defined and how. Each type is given a characteristic strategy for making decisions. The types are part of the system Ra Uru Hu formulated in the late 1980s and are a modern construction rather than an inherited one.

- A modern authored system with no established scientific standing. In the only empirical test located, characterisations produced by Human Design methods could not be validated against the NEO PI-R personality inventory, and assent to them was found to be consistent with the Barnum effect. 2

The Five Types
Human Design sorts every chart into one of five types (Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector and Reflector), determined by which of the nine centres are defined and how they connect. Each type is given a characteristic "strategy" for making decisions and engaging with life: the Generator to respond, the Projector to wait for invitation, the Manifestor to inform, the Reflector to wait a lunar cycle.
The type is the entry point of a Human Design reading, held to describe a person's basic energetic role, how they are "designed" to operate, and the rest of the chart refines it.
A modern synthesis
Human Design was formulated in the late 1980s by Ra Uru Hu (Robert Alan Krakower), who combined the I Ching, astrology, the chakra system and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life into a single chart, the bodygraph. The five types are one of its central features. The atlas presents the system as a contemporary construction with a datable origin, describing its terms without endorsing its claims.
