Musical Works

90 entries. Click any to see everything it connects to.

Composed and recorded musical works studied as historical and religious objects: albums, oratorios, liturgical dramas and other compositions whose creation, reception or use carries documented religious significance. This is distinct from the hymn type, which holds liturgical and devotional texts themselves, the words and forms a tradition actually recites or sings within its ritual life. A hymn is the text a congregation prays; an entry here is the work an audience or a congregation encounters as a historical artifact, dated, attributed and reviewed the way any composed thing is. The two lists cross only when a work becomes what a tradition actually uses in worship, and each entry here says plainly whether, and how, that has happened, rather than leaving the reader to infer it from the work's fame alone.

What a Musical Work Entry Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A musical work entry records a piece of music, a chant, a hymn setting, a recorded song or album, composed or performed for a religious purpose or carrying explicitly religious subject matter, distinct from the atlas's separate Hymn entries in covering a wider range of forms, liturgical chant, devotional recordings, contemporary religious music released outside any formal liturgy, that a hymn entry's narrower, congregational sense does not reach.

An entry records a work's origin, who created or first performed it and where, and how it functions within its tradition, whether it belongs to formal liturgical use, to private devotional listening, or to a wider popular audience that may or may not share the tradition it draws on. Where a work carries a documented religious subject rather than only a religious origin, an artist working from personal faith but writing for a general audience, the entry records that distinction too.

Religious music varies enormously in how it reaches a listener, from chant transmitted almost entirely through direct oral instruction to recordings distributed globally within days of release, and an entry records that context because how a piece of religious music travels, and to whom, is frequently as informative as the music itself about what role it plays in the tradition that produced it.

Ethnomusicology and the Study of Devotional Music

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Studying devotional music seriously means treating it as more than a recorded artifact to be analyzed on the page; the ethnomusicologist Regula Burckhardt Qureshi's study of qawwali, the devotional Sufi music of the Indian subcontinent, works directly from fieldwork, sitting with performers and the audiences gathered around them at actual devotional gatherings, because a great deal of what a piece of devotional music does depends on the setting it is performed in and the relationship between performer and listener that the setting creates.

That fieldwork based method matters because a devotional performance is rarely a fixed, repeatable object the way a printed score is. A qawwali performance responds live to its listeners, extending a phrase that visibly moves the audience toward ecstatic devotion and cutting one that does not land, so that no single recording fully captures what the tradition understands the music to be doing in the moment.

The same lesson generalizes well beyond qawwali. Wherever a musical work entry describes a tradition's devotional music, the entry tries to record not only the piece itself but something of how it is actually used, sung, chanted or played, and by whom, since the fixed recording an entry can point to is frequently only a trace of a much more responsive living practice.
