Baalbek attracts more ancient-astronaut attention than almost any site in the Mediterranean, and the refutation is unusually tidy, because the evidence is lying in the open a few hundred metres away.
The claim. The podium of the temple of Jupiter incorporates the trilithon: three limestone blocks of roughly 800 tonnes each, among the largest worked stones ever moved. Nearby in the quarry lie the Stone of the Pregnant Woman (around 1,000 tonnes) and a still larger block found in 2014. The argument made from this is that no ancient people could have cut and moved such masses, therefore the podium is the work of a lost civilisation or of visitors from elsewhere, with the Romans merely building on top of it.
The answer. The quarry is the disproof, and it disproves the claim in several independent ways at once.
- The stone is local, and the blocks match the quarry bed they came from.
- The unfinished blocks are still attached to the bedrock along one face, caught mid-extraction, which is what an abandoned Roman quarry looks like and not what a mysteriously advanced one does.
- They carry Roman tool marks and show the standard sequence: channel cut around the block, undercut, then separation.
- The quarry lies uphill of the temple, so the haul was assisted by gradient, which is exactly how you would site it.
- Roman engineering demonstrably had the capstans, sledges, rollers, levers and organised labour for masses of this order, and moved comparable weights elsewhere, notably obelisks shipped from Egypt to Rome.
The genuine question at Baalbek is logistical, not physical: how many men, how many capstans, over how long. That is an interesting engineering problem and it has plausible answers. It is not a mystery.
The pattern is worth naming, because it recurs at Great Zimbabwe, at Nan Madol and at Ile-Ife in this same table: impressive construction is attributed to someone other than the people who built it. At Baalbek the displacement is less racially loaded than in those cases, since nobody disputes that Romans built the temples, but it is the same move, and it survives for the same reason, which is that the alternative requires reading about quarrying.
A German expedition worked here from 1898 after Kaiser Wilhelm II visited and took an interest. The temple of Bacchus beside the Jupiter temple is more complete than any temple standing in Rome itself.
