The scientific study of celestial objects, space and the physical universe, pursued through observation and mathematical modelling. Astronomy and astrology were the same undertaking for most of their shared history, practiced by the same observers using the same data, and only diverged as separate disciplines in the early modern period. It remains the working discipline behind the study of constellations, calendars and the astronomical claims several traditions build their cosmology on.

Astronomy's own description already records that it "diverged as separate disciplines [from astrology] in the early modern period"; historians place the split at different marks depending on which kind of separation is meant: Copernicus's 1543 De Revolutionibus (the mathematical break with geocentrism), Kepler and Galileo's telescopic observation in the early 1600s (the empirical break), or Newton's 1687 Principia Mathematica (the point at which celestial mechanics became a fully mathematical, non-astrological physical science, the value recorded here). No single year commands consensus; this is a real scholarly disagreement with named positions, not an unanswered question.

A Science That Used to Be One Discipline With Its Own Divination

For most of its history astronomy was not a separate discipline from astrology at all; the two names describe one undertaking, the systematic observation of the sky, practiced by the same people for calendrical, agricultural, navigational and divinatory purposes together. Babylonian scribes who tracked the risings of Venus to omen the fate of the king were doing the same positional observation that let them fix the length of the year; Ptolemy, whose Almagest set the mathematical model of the heavens that stood for over a thousand years, wrote the Tetrabiblos, a working astrological manual, as its companion volume rather than as a different field.

The split is a genuinely early modern event, not an ancient one. Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo were reworking the mathematical model of the heavens, not rejecting astrology as such, and Kepler himself cast horoscopes for a living while insisting on more rigorous physical foundations for planetary motion. What separated the disciplines over the following two centuries was less a single discovery than the gradual insistence, hardening through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, that a science of celestial mechanics should predict positions and explain causes without also claiming to predict human affairs. Astronomy kept the mathematics and the physics; astrology kept the older claim about what the positions mean for a life, and the atlas treats the two as related but distinct disciplines accordingly, astronomy's own entry here, astrology's several, one per tradition, elsewhere in this section.

What This Atlas Uses It For

This atlas leans on astronomy less as a subject in its own right than as the working method behind several of the things it describes elsewhere. The decans, the sixty Egyptian figures that divide the zodiac into ten-degree stretches, began as a genuine timekeeping device, stars whose successive risings marked the hours of an Egyptian night before later tradition folded them into astrology; reading the decan pages without the underlying astronomy leaves the timekeeping half of the story invisible. Archaeoastronomy, the study of how ancient monuments align with solstice sunrises, lunar standstills or particular stars, underwrites several of the sacred sites this atlas describes, sites whose religious significance is bound up with an astronomical alignment their builders clearly intended and modern survey can still measure.

Calendars are the clearest case. A lunisolar calendar's leap month, a solar calendar's leap day, and the recurring argument within several traditions about when a new month or a new year properly begins are all, underneath the religious question, an astronomical one: how to reconcile a lunar month that does not divide evenly into a solar year. The atlas records the religious answer each tradition gives without needing to relitigate the astronomy behind it, but the astronomy is what makes the religious answer necessary in the first place, and this entry exists so that dependency has somewhere to point.
