David Kinsley was a scholar of Hindu goddess traditions, and this academic book, published by University of California Press, is a study of the ten Mahavidyas, a group of fierce tantric goddesses, examining their iconography, mythology and place within Hindu tantric practice through primary Sanskrit sources and secondary tradition. Its strength is Kinsley's sustained scholarly focus on goddess traditions specifically, which were less studied in Western academic writing on Hinduism than male deity traditions at the time, giving the Mahavidyas serious dedicated treatment. Its limit is that tantric traditions vary considerably by lineage and region in how they understand and practice devotion to these goddesses, and a single academic synthesis necessarily generalizes across that variation to some degree.

Reliability Tier1
David Kinsley's standing scholarly treatment of the ten Mahavidyas as a group, taking each in turn through its iconography, texts and living worship, and arguing the set is held together by the deliberate inclusion of the inauspicious rather than any single theology. NotesThe standing scholarly treatment of the ten Mahavidyas as a group, taking each in turn through its iconography, its texts and its living worship, and arguing that the set is held together by the deliberate inclusion of the inauspicious rather than by any single theology. Kinsley's earlier Hindu Goddesses, already catalogued separately in this atlas, covers the group more briefly.
