The main fault lines follow the schism between East and West and the Reformation, with later divisions running inside the traditions those produced. All hold Jesus of Nazareth to be the Christ; almost everything else has at some point been in dispute.FactsLearn MoreSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0 open reader challenges)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedThe branches of Christianity, divided chiefly over authority - who may define doctrine - and over the sacraments, the ordering of ministry and the reading of scripture. The main fault lines are the Christological divisions of the fifth century, the East-West schism conventionally dated 1054, and the sixteenth-century Reformation. 2StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedContested: denomination arose in English-speaking Protestantism for bodies that recognise one another as legitimately named parts of one church. The Catholic and Orthodox churches do not accept it as a description of themselves. 2DirectoryCategoryWell-attestedDenominations 1AttestationEra of AttestationWell-attestedThe first enduring divisions date from the Christological controversies of the fifth century, at Ephesus in 431 and Chalcedon in 451, and not from the Reformation. 2BrowseCompareSelect all 95African Methodist Episcopal ChurchChristianity78 linksAfrican Methodist Episcopal Zion ChurchChristianity66 linksAladuraChristianity19 linksAmishChristianity48 linksAnabaptismChristianity85 linksAnglican CommunionChristianity129 linksAnglicanismChristianity243 linksArmenian Apostolic ChurchChristianity96 linksAssyrian Church of the EastChristianity57 linksBaptistChristianity207 linksCalvinism (Reformed)Christianity216 linksChristian Methodist Episcopal ChurchChristianity65 linksChristian ScienceChristianity37 linksChurch of CyprusChristianity140 linksChurch of EnglandChristianity177 linksChurch of God (Anderson, Indiana)Christianity27 linksChurch of GreeceChristianity142 linksChurch of IrelandChristianity119 linksChurch of ScotlandChristianity81 linksChurch of SwedenChristianity96 linksChurch of the NazareneChristianity51 linksChurches of ChristChristianity33 linksCoptic OrthodoxyChristianity104 linksDisciples of ChristChristianity37 linksDutch Reformed ChurchChristianity101 linksEastern OrthodoxyChristianity355 linksEcumenical Patriarchate of ConstantinopleChristianity135 linksEritrean Orthodox Tewahedo ChurchChristianity89 linksEthiopian Orthodox Tewahedo ChurchChristianity108 linksEvangelical Lutheran Church in AmericaChristianity120 linksEvangelicalismChristianity98 linksFree Methodist ChurchChristianity60 linksGeorgian Orthodox ChurchChristianity146 linksGlobal Methodist ChurchChristianity69 linksGreek Orthodox ChurchChristianity158 linksJehovah's WitnessesChristianity127 linksKimbanguist ChurchChristianity13 linksLatter-day Saints (Mormonism)Christianity128 linksLutheranismChristianity244 linksMaronite ChurchChristianity64 linksMennonitesChristianity69 linksMethodismChristianity165 linksMoravian ChurchChristianity73 linksNational Baptist Convention of AmericaChristianity55 linksOld BelieversChristianity85 linksOneida CommunityChristianity14 linksOriental OrthodoxyChristianity144 linksPentecostalismChristianity133 linksPresbyterianismChristianity152 linksProgressive National Baptist ConventionChristianity58 linksProtestantismChristianity103 linksQuakerism (Religious Society of Friends)Christianity72 linksRoman CatholicismChristianity766 linksRomanian Orthodox ChurchChristianity141 linksRussian Orthodox ChurchChristianity179 linksSaint Thomas ChristiansChristianity23 linksSerbian Orthodox ChurchChristianity145 linksSeventh-day AdventismChristianity112 linksShakersChristianity32 linksSkoptsyChristianity11 linksThe Episcopal ChurchChristianity129 linksThe United Methodist ChurchChristianity90 linksUkrainian Greek Catholic ChurchChristianity83 linksUkrainian Orthodox ChurchChristianity130 linksWesleyan ChurchChristianity53 linksZion Christian ChurchChristianity16 linksAdvent Christian ChurchChristianity6 linksAmerican Baptist Churches USAChristianity9 linksAmerican Unitarian AssociationChristianity9 linksApostolic Lutheran Church of AmericaChristianity5 linksAssemblies of GodChristianity25 linksBulgarian Orthodox ChurchChristianity7 linksCelestial Church of ChristChristianity3 linksChristian and Missionary AllianceChristianity13 linksChurch of God in ChristChristianity16 linksCongregationalistsChristianity19 linksEvangelical Lutheran Church of FinlandChristianity6 linksFinnish Evangelical Lutheran Church of AmericaChristianity8 linksGrace Communion InternationalChristianity7 linksHillsong ChurchChristianity6 linksHistorically Black Protestant TraditionChristianity14 linksIglesia ni CristoChristianity3 linksLa Luz del MundoChristianity5 linksMainline ProtestantismChristianity14 linksNational Baptist Convention USA IncorporatedChristianity8 linksNational Evangelical Lutheran ChurchChristianity4 linksNondenominational ChristianityChristianity1 linkOneness PentecostalismChristianity14 linksPresbyterian Church (U.S.A.)Christianity9 linksSaint John Coltrane African Orthodox ChurchChristianity3 linksSouthern Baptist ConventionChristianity13 linksThe Salvation ArmyChristianity17 linksUnited Church of ChristChristianity12 linksUniversalist Church of AmericaChristianity11 linksWorld Mission Society Church of GodChristianity2 linksLearn MoreThe Branches of Christianity This group gathers the denominations of Christianity, the world's largest religion, whose two-thousand-year history has produced a wide family of churches divided by doctrine, authority, liturgy and history. The major fault lines are the split between the Eastern and Western churches (traditionally dated 1054) and the Reformation of the sixteenth century. The browser will find the great communions, Roman Catholicism, the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches, and the many Protestant families (Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal and more), together with older and smaller bodies. The entries describe each branch's distinctive teachings and origins without treating any one as the standard against which the others are measured.Unity and division Christian denominations share the core confession of Jesus Christ while differing over questions such as church authority, the sacraments, the role of scripture and tradition, and the path of salvation. Some divisions are ancient and doctrinal; others are national, cultural or the result of later revival and reform. The atlas presents each denomination in its own terms, noting where it stands on the questions that separate it from others and how it understands its relation to the wider Christian body, from claims of unique continuity to the ecumenical movement that seeks reunion.Sources1.
