The fixed star Almach lies at Taurus 16 degrees 3 minutes, of the nature of Venus. It is Gamma Andromedae, set at the left foot of Andromeda, and is a celebrated multiple star of contrasting golden and blue components. It is fortunate, giving honor, artistic and musical talent, popularity, and success gained with ease. The fixed stars hold their places and lend their character to any planet that meets them.

Gamma Andromedae, the Celebrated Double

Almach is Gamma Andromedae, apparent magnitude about 2.1, at roughly 350 light years, and it is one of the finest coloured double stars in the sky for a small telescope: a golden-orange giant primary beside a noticeably blue-green companion, the contrast striking enough that observers have written about it for two centuries. The companion is itself multiple, so the system resolves into at least four stars on closer inspection. It marks the foot of Andromeda, at the end of the chain of stars running out from the Great Square.

The blue-green companion's colour is a well-attested case of a contrast effect: the human eye judges a star's hue partly against its neighbour, and observers have long debated how much of the companion's apparent blue-green tint is intrinsic to the star and how much is a perceptual consequence of sitting beside Almach's much brighter gold-orange primary, a question later spectroscopy has only partly settled. Almach's system was first resolved into a double by William Herschel in 1778, and the fainter component was itself found to be a spectroscopic binary only with instruments unavailable in Herschel's own lifetime, so the four-star structure now known was established across more than a century of steadily improving observation.

A Star of Venus, and Honour

Almach is given the nature of Venus in the tradition, read for honour, eminence and artistic or musical gifts, again a delineation carried by Robson out of the earlier compilers rather than an explicit Ptolemaic assignment. The Arabic name comes from al-anaq al-ard, a small predatory animal of the desert, one of several beasts whose names were attached to stars in this region of the sky. As with the other Andromeda stars, the reliable content is the astronomy; the personality reading is a modern inheritance stated with more confidence than its sources warrant.

Al-anaq al-ard, the animal in Almach's Arabic name, is usually identified as a caracal or similar small desert cat, one of several predator names, alongside wolves, foxes and lynxes, that pre-Islamic Arabian star-lore scattered across this part of the sky before the Ptolemaic figures of Andromeda and Perseus were mapped onto the same stars. The predatory-animal sense behind Almach's Arabic name sits within the same regional habit of naming stars for desert creatures that also produced the ostrich-names of Al Thalimain in Aquila, a naming convention largely independent of the Greek figures later mapped onto the same stretch of sky.
